In line with the Arcam philosophy of creating the best audio they can, they saw no reason not to apply this to audio visual components. Just because you want to watch movies etc. the sound should still be to Arcam standards.
They spent 2½ years working on the project, much of it listening to the systems until the AVR series was released. The AVR600 and AVR500 are both integrated AV receivers whereas the pinnacle of the project is the AV888. This has no amplification but is a pure pre-amplifier with high quality balanced line connections out, ideal for the FMJP777 power amplifier.
Wolfson 8741 D/A converters are used on all 8 channels to provide ultra linear conversion of the digital signals at 192kHz 24-bit. Surround processing is handled by Analogue Devices. Their ADSP21366 and ADSP21367 chip sets decode the surround formats from DVD and Blu-ray, equally happy with signals fom 2ch up to 8ch and all modern formats SD/HD are catered for. Once all the processing is complete you still need to have a control system in place to control the volume. As you don't want to add any noise to the system, just control the level, a volume system in line with the high quality of the other electronics is needed. Crystal Semiconductor stereo and premium electronic volume controls are used to do jut that.
To ensure these signals are then passed on to the external amplification as cleanly as they can be, Burr Brown DRV134 balanced line drivers deliver impeccable quality signals . Standard phono pre-outs are available alongside the balanced signals for not balanced systems.
Video is treated equally well. Analogue signals can be up converted to HDMI and HDMI output can be on one or two monitors. Pixel works video scaling and frame rate conversion is used for these processes. each input can have individual settings made for various types of noise reduction and edge enhancement.
The AV888 is constructed the same way as the other AVR products. Solidly. Aluminium is widely used with vibration dampening used throughout and shielding from unwanted electromagnetic interference. Various power supplies are used internally to drive critical circuits, all multi regulated to ensure purity.
Overall the AV888 can be controlled in four ways. Press a button on the front, via its IR remote (IR input jacks from each of the 3 zones), full 2-way control via RS232 or IP control is available via the Ethernet port. This can also stream audio from your network and the internet (if available on the network)
