Linn Article - A General History

“To us, music in your life is a necessity and quality reproduction essential.”

Linn Products was established in 1972 by Ivor Tiefenbrun. Born in Scotland’s second City Glasgow, he was passionate about two things – engineering and listening to music.

No matter how hard Ivor tried he just couldn’t buy a hi-fi good enough to satisfy his needs he so as you do he decided to make one himself!

In 1972 Linn introduced the Sondek LP12 turntable. Which is now the official longest-lived hi-fi product still in production anywhere in the world.   And it’s no coincidence that the LP12 is today still the benchmark by which all turntables are judged. The remarkable ability of the Sondek LP12 turntable to extract far deeper music information from records led to the understanding that retrieving and protecting the source signal carefully was what mattered most.

The Linn Sondek LP12 turntable revolutionised the hi-fi industry proving categorically that the source of the music is the most important component in the hi-fi chain. These Linn standards are just as demanding today as they were in the 70’s.

Linn then set out to make the other components in the hi-fi chain as revolutionary as the first, setting new standards for performance over the years with each new product.

To hear a Linn system is a real treat to the discerning ear in comparison to other high end Hi Fi systems.  You never “buy” a Linn product you instead invest your money in a leisure life enhancing product.

From the moment you receive your purchase you start to tingle with the anticipation of not only hearing the quality, but admiring and cooing over the beautiful build quality that only a handmade product can give you.

If you have opted for a Linn system that requires custom installation, being on site whilst the install is taking place is just like awaiting the birth of your 1st born.  The engineers become the midwives and you anxiously pace round and round pondering just which CD will be the 1st to grace the Linn System, or which DVD will do justice to the installation.

Today, Linn is a substantial independent precision engineering company based in Glasgow, Scotland, uniquely focused on the design, manufacture and sale of complete music and home theatre systems for customers the world over who seek only the best. As one who has spent an unhealthy amount of money over the years in the search for the holy grail in sound quality just like Ivor Tiefenbrun, I can now say after purchasing my 1st Linn system, the search is well and truly over!  No more stressing over speaker matches, interconnects, a one off investment in Linn has put years of unrest and niggling annoyances to bed!
